Other Relevant Employment and Inter-Cultural Experience

October 1998: Mandarin interpreter accompanying delegation of Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee visiting Beijing and Shanghai.

1992-1999: Consultant for School Year Abroad (SYA), an American educational group, based in Andover, MA, which sponsors a residential Chinese language program for foreign students at No. 2 Middle School of Beijing Normal University. My consulting activities included curriculum development and Chinese language teacher training.

1992-1996: Chair, Executive Committee of the China Consortium, Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), of New York. Traveled annually to CIEE’s overseas centers in Taipei, Nanjing, Beijing and Shanghai, to evaluate program results and to participate in teacher training sessions and in negotiations regarding program development.

1992-1995: Member, Executive Board, Chinese Language Teachers Association (USA).

July 1985: Tested for simultaneous interpreter’s position in Chinese at UNESCO office in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jun 1984: Simultaneous interpreter for conference on Chinese painting at Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Jun–Dec 1980: Six month’s residence in Beijing as liaison officer and interpreter for Turner International Inc., at intensive negotiations between this New York-based construction management contractor and various Chinese agencies, including Ministry of Foreign Trade, Central Construction Bureau, Beijing City government, and provincial governments.

Jun 1980: Simultaneous interpreter for conference on Chinese bronzes history at Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

1978: Finalist in US Department of State’s selection of full-time Mandarin interpreter.

1976-early 1980s: Occasional escort interpreter for National Committee on US-China Relations, New York, NY, during US visits of Chinese delegations in cultural, technical, and diplomatic fields.

1967-72: Five years’ continuous residence in Taipei, Taiwan as graduate student; lived in Chinese student dormitory and in homes of local families.
