Dialogues Between European and Asian Commercial Documents Trade, Cultural exchanges and Knowledge construction in Modern East Asia
International Conference, November 1st and 2nd, 2013
The arrival of the Portuguese fleets at Chinese coastal regions in the early 16th century, followed by other European maritime countries, opened centuries of gradual transformation in East Asia. The development of maritime trade also moved markets and trade centres from the “silk roads” in Northern Eurasian Continent towards the Southern regions. The rise of Taiwan as an interchange hub in the East Asian maritime trade networks is a remarkable example.
In order to facilitate the trade with Asian merchants and obtain interesting benefits in Far East market, European merchants and agents of the various East India companies carried out vast and deep investigations on the civilizations and natural resources in China and East Asia. The knowledge collected from Asia had great influence on the formation of modern science in Western Europe, in fields such as map making, botany and so on.
At the times Europeans obtained knowledge on China and East Asia from extensive documents. Beside the descriptions in the existing Asian and European literature, the records, correspondence and diaries of agents on board, European ships to and from Asian are rich and valuable sources of information. During the period, several European nations also organized scientific and commercial missions to carry out systematic exploration, investigation as well as field survey. The European trade documents thus hold vast quantities of descriptions of China and East Asia that offer precious evidence for modern historians to supplement gaps in or to compare with the historiography in East Asian languages.
The goal of the present Conference is to provide a platform for bringing together European and East Asian trade archives, in order to try and reconstitute the trade routes, models, and networks of different periods. At the same time, through the descriptions of the politics, economy and technology of East Asia, we aim to examine the influences of European Far East trade on the shaping of European knowledge of East Asia as well as on the evolution of East Asia itself.
